Looking at or from Auckland’s Sky Tower

OK, here’s my quiz for the day: What is the tallest structure in all of New Zealand? And for a bonus point, what is the tallest structure in the entire southern hemisphere? The answer, my friends, to both questions is the Sky Tower in Auckland and if you missed it then I guess you just didn’t notice the title of this post!

The Sky Tower is more than 1000 feet high and it dominates just about any picture you can take of Auckland’s skyline.  It was completed in 1997 and is officially the 15th tallest tower in the world, just inches higher than Sydney’s tower and the Eiffel Tower. Auckland is spread out all over, much like LA,  and on the Sky Tower observation deck you can see for 50 miles in all directions, or just about all of Auckland!

Here’s a collection of some of the pictures I took of the Sky Tower — mostly on our second day in New Zealand. I hope you like them.

View from the Exercise Centre on the fourth floor of the Hilton Hotel. This is the first photo I took in New Zealand. It was taken with my 50 mm lens. For most of the other photos I used my 11-16mm wide angle zoom lens.

The Auckland skyline from Devonport.

The view from our balcony.

View from our room -- oh oh, how did my feet get in there?

View from the Auckland Domain.

From the city sight-seeing bus.

The Sky Tower is part of a complex called Sky City that includes an hotel and a casino.

View from the bus as we drove right by.

After our sight-seeing bus tour and lunch near our hotel we decided to walk to the Sky Tower. Here's the view from two blocks away.

Lots of feet, including mine.

Views from the Observation Deck.

Most adults are afraid to step on the glass.

We have been to many towers on our travels and this ranks with the best of them. It was raining cats and dogs when we visited Seattle's Space Needle and we couldn't see a thing.

We visited three towers in 2007. The view from the Skylon Tower at Niagara Falls was impressive. At the CN Tower in Toronto it was too cloudy. And at the Empire State Building in NYC it was too smoggy.

Some people pay a lot of money to jump off the tower!

Looking straight down.

The volcano in the distance last blew up around 500 years ago.

Oh, no -- there goes another one!

We stayed on the Observation Deck for about an hour. During that time four people -- all women -- jumped off.

In San Francisco people jump off the Golden Gate Bridge to end their lives. In New Zealand they jump off bridges and buildings to celebrate their lives!

Almost sunset.

Amazingly, I’ve been to all the towers mentioned, think the CNN Tower is very similar, including the glass floor (no issue with me on that, others would never dare!) …But it would be a cold day in… Death Valley, if I were to even remotely consider jumping off the tower! Not even 50 years ago!! M

    . . . I did not see your feet on the glass . . .

  4. Ha-ha! You sure didn’t!
