Leanne Cole has chosen Boats(s) as the theme for this week’s Monochrome Madness Challenge and I have decided to submit this photo I took last year of a rabelo sitting proudly along Cais da Gaia with Porto’s Ribeira district and the Dom Luis I Bridge in the background.

The rabelo is a wooden sail boat that was used to transport port wine barrels down the Douro from the Douro Valley vineyards to the wine aging cellars in Gaia. There’s a whole string of these replicas along Cais da Gaia, each bearing a banner of a popular port wine brand. This one happens to display the Graham brand.
The port wine is brought to Gaia these days by way of trucks. The rabelos of today are mainly for tourists with euros in their pockets and cameras in their hands.
Every year on June 24th during the Sao Joao festivities there is a rabelo regatta on the Douro. That’s when you can see this boat with its sail unfurled and displaying the Graham name.
You can see the color version of this photo here (third photo).
Australian photographer Leanne Cole hosts the weekly Monochrome Madness Challenge. For the first week of every month she suggests a specific theme for that week’s challenge. Drop by her website on Wednesdays (Tuesdays in Europe and North America) to see what Leanne and other photographers from all over the world are doing
